Rome rewards people who slow down. Yes, the Colosseum and the Vatican are unmissable — but the city's real charm is in the in-between moments: an espresso standing at a counter, a fountain you stumble across by accident, a trattoria with no English menu and the best carbonara of your life. It's busier and pricier than the rest of this list in peak season, which is exactly why the shoulder months matter here more than anywhere else.

April–May and September–October are by far the best windows — warm enough to enjoy fully, cool enough to walk for hours, and significantly cheaper and quieter than the June–August peak, when Rome gets both very hot and very crowded.

Getting there

Most budget flights from London land at Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA), about 15km southeast of the centre — closer in than the larger Fiumicino. The Terravision and SIT bus services connect Ciampino to Roma Termini in around 40 minutes for roughly £6, and taxis have a fixed rate of about £35–40.

Ryanair operates direct flights from Stansted to Ciampino, with flight times of around 2h45. Booking a few months ahead generally finds the best fares outside the summer peak.

What to see & do

01

The Colosseum & Roman Forum

Book timed-entry tickets in advance — queues without them can eat half a day. Visiting in the late afternoon avoids both the heat and the largest tour groups.

02

The Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

Vast, often crowded, and absolutely worth it. An early-morning slot is the single best way to improve the experience here.

03

Trastevere

The neighbourhood across the river — narrow cobbled streets, ivy-covered buildings, and the highest concentration of genuinely good, reasonably priced trattorias in the city.

04

Trevi Fountain & the Spanish Steps

Both are at their best at sunrise, before the crowds — a 7am visit feels like a different city entirely.

05

Campo de' Fiori market

A lively morning food market that turns into a square full of bars by evening — a good spot to see the shift from daytime Rome to nighttime Rome in one place.
