Palma is the rare Mediterranean island capital that works as a genuine city break, not just a beach trip. La Seu cathedral dominates the skyline over the old port, the lanes of the old town hide tiny squares and tapas bars, and the city beaches are a short bus ride away. Outside the July–August peak, it's a relaxed, walkable, and surprisingly affordable long weekend.

Late May, June and September give you warm sea temperatures with far smaller crowds and noticeably lower flight and hotel prices than the July–August peak, when both spike sharply across the island.

Getting there

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) sits about 8km from the centre. The EMT bus line A1 runs roughly every 15 minutes into Plaça d'Espanya for around €5, taking 20–25 minutes; taxis cost roughly £20–25.

Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 all fly direct from Stansted and Luton with flight times around 2h20. Outside school holidays, fares are usually very reasonable when booked a few months ahead.

What to see & do

01

La Seu Cathedral

The Gothic cathedral towering over the old port is the city's icon — go inside for the Gaudí-restored interior and the famous rose window, then walk the seafront promenade beneath it at sunset.

02

Old Town (Casc Antic)

A maze of narrow lanes between the cathedral and Plaça Major, dotted with courtyards, small galleries, and unhurried café terraces — best explored slowly in the cooler morning hours.

03

Es Baluard Museum

A modern and contemporary art museum built into the old city walls, with a rooftop terrace looking out over the bay — one of the better-value cultural stops in the city.

04

Platja de Palma

The big city beach a short bus ride east of the centre — wide sand, calm water, and plenty of low-key beach bars away from the old town's tourist crush.
