Berlin packs an enormous amount into a city break — Cold War history around every corner, a museum scene that rivals any in Europe, and a nightlife reputation that's entirely deserved. It's also one of the most affordable major capitals to visit from the UK: cheap, frequent direct flights, a brilliant transport network, and food and drink prices that go a lot further than in Western European peers.

May, June and September offer the best balance of mild weather, long daylight hours, and lower flight prices than the July–August summer peak — when the city's many open-air festivals also push hotel rates up.

Getting there

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) connects directly to the city centre via the Airport Express (FEX) train, reaching Berlin Hauptbahnhof in around 30 minutes for under €5 with a day ticket.

Ryanair and easyJet both run frequent direct flights from Stansted and Luton at around 1h50 — among the cheapest and most frequent budget routes from London to a major European capital.

What to see & do

01

Brandenburg Gate & Reichstag

The city's defining landmarks sit a short walk apart — book the free Reichstag dome visit a few days ahead for sweeping views over the government quarter.

02

East Side Gallery

The longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall, covered in murals by international artists — a powerful and free open-air gallery along the Spree.

03

Museum Island

Five major museums on one island in the Spree, including the Pergamon and Neues Museum — the Museum Pass covers all of them for one reasonable price.

04

Tempelhofer Feld

A vast former airport turned public park, popular with locals for cycling, kite-flying and picnics — a brilliant free way to see Berliners at leisure.
